WASHINGTON -- It's becoming harder to find the right snow to build an igloo, and melting permafrost is turning land into mud. With climate change the nature of the Arctic is changing, too, in ways that worry the people who live there.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History opens a pair of exhibits on Saturday: "Arctic: A Friend Acting Strangely," and "Atmosphere: Change is in the Air," discussing what is happening to the climate and how it affects people living in the planet's northernmost areas.

Forget about Avian (bird) flu. The threat of it becoming a pandemic is more a political scare tactic and potential bonanza for drug company profits and its major shareholders' net worth (including Gilead Sciences, the developer of the Tamiflu drug and its former Chairman and major shareholder Donald Rumsfeld) than a likely public health crisis - unless you live around infected chickens or take an unproven safe immunization shot. There are much more other likely killer bacterial and viral threats than Avian that get little attention. Don't worry about possible or unlikely threats. Worry about real ones. Bacteria and viruses untreatable by anti-biotics are good examples. So is global warming and many others. But, there's possibly one threat that tops all others both in gravity and because it's been deliberately concealed from the public - never discussed, explained or had any action taken to remediate it. It's the global threat from the toxic effects of depleted uranium (DU), and like global warming, DU has the potential to destroy all planetary life. How can something so potentially destructive be hidden and ignored and why?

Here are the CIA front companies used for 'rendition', that is the illegal capture, transportation and torture of individuals, in violation of national and international law. This is SOP for the CIA since they invaded Guatemala for the United Fruit Company fifty years ago.

Rendering is also a term used in the livestock business for herding animals together in preparation for them to be slaughtered in Rendering Houses, abatoirs, slaughter houses, meat packing plants.

Every time there is some military operation the CIA black ops comes up with an 'Air America' front which inevitably ends up engaged in side operations such as drug (opium/heroin/cocaine) and arms smuggling.

The Contras, Cocaine, and Covert Operations

Which of course is how the CIA pays for its off the books operations which is what Rendition is.

The Bush Administration, while publicly advocating diplomacy in order to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, has increased clandestine activities inside Iran and intensified planning for a possible major air attack. Current and former American military and intelligence officials said that Air Force planning groups are drawing up lists of targets, and teams of American combat troops have been ordered into Iran, under cover, to collect targeting data and to establish contact with anti-government ethnic-minority groups. The officials say that President Bush is determined to deny the Iranian regime the opportunity to begin a pilot program, planned for this spring, to enrich uranium.

A new survey of scientific studies from across the Northern Hemisphere documents the phenomenon.

Among the findings:

- Lilacs and honeysuckle bloom six to 10 days earlier than they did a few decades ago.

- Canada geese and robins arrive earlier in the spring.

Judges notice impact of climate change on wine quality

he quality of wines world-wide is being affected by climate change and critics and judges are already noticing the changes.

That is the consensus from a world conference on climate change and wine in Europe.

An Australian speaker at the conference, Dr Richard Smart, says industry leaders are already planning for big shifts in varieties grown in established wine regions.

"You've got a situation where a region that's developed a reputation, let's say Coonawarra, over a hundred years or so, or some of the European regions over many hundred years, will potentially lose that reputation," he said.
